Blooming Brilliant: Local Councils Giving Away Free Native Plants to Residents

“This fantastic initiative will help local gardens attract local wildlife and improve garden aesthetic,” says Moorabool Shire Mayor

Green thumbs and nature lovers across Victoria are in for a treat as several local councils roll out initiatives offering free native plants to residents.

These programs aim to boost biodiversity, support local ecosystems, and beautify neighbourhoods with species uniquely adapted to each area’s climate and soil conditions.

Moorabool Shire’s Native Plant Bonanza

Moorabool Shire Council is leading the charge with a generous offer of up to ten free native plants per household.

Mayor Cr Ally Munari enthusiastically supports the program, stating, “Planting native flora can provide food and shelter for birds, insects and other animals, improve garden structure and aesthetic value, and add a burst of colour to your outdoor space.”

The council has organised a series of distribution events, where residents can collect their plants at various locations across the shire. To participate, residents need only bring proof of residency and a container to carry their new green friends home.

“This fantastic initiative will help local gardens attract local wildlife and improve garden aesthetic,” said the Moorabool Shire Mayor

Yarra Ranges’ Ambitious “Ribbons of Green”

Not to be outdone, Yarra Ranges Council has set an impressive goal with its “Ribbons of Green” program.

Aiming to plant 60,000 native plants annually, this initiative focuses on larger properties, schools, and community groups.

To qualify, applicants must have at least one hectare of land and be prepared to plant a minimum of 300 plants.

The council provides not only the plants but also expert advice on site preparation and species selection.

A Growing Trend Across Victoria

The green wave doesn’t stop there. Several other Victorian councils have jumped on the native plant bandwagon:

  • Banyule Council offers an Indigenous Plants Voucher Programme
  • Mildura Rural City Council runs a Free Native Tree Programme
  • Cardinia Shire Council provides plant vouchers through its Greening Cardinia initiative
  • City of Monash encourages wildlife-friendly gardens with its Gardens for Wildlife Programme

Why Native Plants?

These initiatives highlight a growing recognition of the importance of native flora. Native plants are not only adapted to local conditions, requiring less water and maintenance, but they also play a crucial role in supporting local wildlife.

“If you are interested in creating a habitat for birds, bees, or butterflies, or just enjoy the beauty of nature, native plants are the way to go,” encourages Cr Munari.

As these programs gain popularity, they’re not just changing the landscape – they’re fostering a deeper connection between residents and their local environment.

With spring just around the corner, there’s never been a better time for Victorians to embrace their green side and contribute to a more sustainable, biodiverse future.

So, whether you’re in Moorabool, Yarra Ranges, or any of the participating council areas, why not take advantage of these blooming brilliant offers? Your garden – and local wildlife – will thank you.
