Melbourne Vegetable Planting Guide by Month

Use our handy planting guide to ensure that you plant your veggies at the correct time of the year.

Many vegetable varieties can be planted over multiple months while some should only be planted during certain seasons.

This guide is mainly for when to sow seeds either directly into the garden bed or into seed trays.

If you’re purchasing ready-grown seedlings, use this as a general guide for the best planting months.

January

Beans

Beans can be sown directly into the garden bed this month. They should only be grown from seeds in the garden because they don’t transplant well.

Beans can also be sown in September, October, November, December, and February. This means that they will grow well over spring and summer and will continue to crop into autumn.

Beetroot

Beetroot can actually be grown for most of the year. It’s also recommended that you plant seeds directly into the garden because root vegetables don’t transplant well.

If you try to transplant them from seedlings, their roots can be easily damaged and become distorted.

You can also plant beetroot during February, March, April, July, August, September, October, November, and December.

Carrots

Like beetroot, carrots can be grown for most of the year except during the coldest months. Being root vegetables, they should also be sown directly into the garden.

Carrot seeds can also be sown into the garden in February, March, April, May, September, October, November, and December.

Potatoes

In Melbourne, potatoes will generally grow all year round in the garden. Seed potatoes should be planted straight into the ground or you can plant them in large pots or potato grow bags.

You will find that once you’ve planted your first crop, they’ll continue to come up year after year unless you really work over the soil to remove all of the baby ones.

You can also plant seed potatoes in February, March, April, May, August, September, October, November, and December.

Silverbeet

Silverbeet is another vegetable that can be grown for most of the year including in winter. It can be planted from seed directly into the ground because the seeds germinate fairly readily.

Just be aware when growing this vegetable in summer, it might bolt fairly quickly when grown in full sun.

That’s why, during summer, it’s best to give leafy greens like silverbeet, some afternoon shade.

Silverbeet seeds can also be sown in February, March, April, May, September, October, November, and December.

February
